Significant percent of the world’s energy is used in the drinking water sector for pumping water through transmission and distribution mains to reach consumers. An energy efficient system along with a smart pumping system will increase the reliability , productivity and better service delivery. Kerala Water Authority started automation of pumps along with SCADA, initially under the JICA project. Now there are more than 400 automated pumps in Kerala Water Authority and the process of automating more is ongoing, with an aim to automate all pumps in a phased manner. Initially submersible type pumps were automated and trial automation was done for VT pumps also. Programme is on the run to automate all pumps under submersible and VT category this year.
